About the Fine Arts Collection at UC Davis
The Fine Arts Collection is a growing resource for teaching, research and discovery. The collection began in the 1960s as a group of Old Master prints acquired by the founding faculty of the university’s art department for classroom instruction. It was formally established in 1971. Today the Fine Arts Collection includes nearly 6,000 works spanning diverse media, cultures and periods, with particular strengths in objects that reflect UC Davis’ influential role in the history of art. Built through the generosity of artists, faculty, collectors and donors, the collection documents the creative and intellectual life of the university while connecting it to broader histories of art and culture. By preserving, studying and sharing the collection, the Manetti Shrem Museum continues the university’s longstanding commitment to learning directly from works of art while fostering research, creativity and critical thinking for future generations.
